F1 vs f2 foxy lady DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE

If you’re up to a good challenge, Kopsick Palm – Arboretum in St. Pete has a few specimens, at least one that can / has produced seed. Or is there anyone on this forum growing the legendary tree? Lol but really I’ve only heard amazing things from this palm and I absolutely love the looks from it. The hybrid Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina. I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.

Can anyone tell me where I can buy a small foxy lady or gear me in the right deduction thank you Myolensis triple and the (now infamous) foxy lady… Last year I added three Beccariophoenix alfredii, which I’m really liking so far due to their hardiness, and some Areca palms. I caught the “Palm tree bug” a few years ago when my wife and I wanted to add some planters to our yard, and I’ve been turned into a palm-tree nerd, as i call myself, ever since. So today is my 24 hour soak, I added some super thrive to the water at 1 tsp per gallon and am hoping that my plant drinks it up!
Sometime even though they are hard, they float. They s/b just a hard and firm as a foxtail or vetchia to be viable. The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure. It took about years of seeding until some viable seed dropped. I have been growing F2 Foxy Ladies for the last 3 years. Well mine has a sparse seed set that dropped today.
I agree with Len, yours is most likely a RSN Hawaiian grown, or Sparksman Florida import that has been resold. If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too. This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture for ages before the final collapse.

• Secondly, drought tolerance is typically referring to in ground established plants.
• Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.
• Now correct me if I am wrong is it true that even the green ones will spit out some variation in its life span ?

I’m no geneticist, but I’ve heard F2 hybrids of anything can be hugely variable with dominant traits ranging from either parent. Also how f2 compares to f1 on their cold hardiness aswell as growth rate. I have an f2 and am wondering how the look of the palm compares to f1. A guy in my area has them for sale pick up at 200 for a baby 1 gallon pot , he had 4 now he has 3  , i got one today  and I am looking forward to watching it grow
There are many other wonderful palms to grow where you are. There are more palms than Foxy Lady. As Dean says, if it doesn’t budge after a week or two of this shock, you may have a dead palm and one day the crownshaft will just collapse on you along with any green material that remains.

I have an f2 foxy lady I might be interested in letting go if you are interested I can come pick up that palm at your convenience,deliver you $200 cash, plus the 3 Pseudophoenix seedlings in the pic if you would be interested in selling. I have got palms from Flouibunda and jungle music and never had the problem I had with this palm of you are going to ship palms at least learn how to pack them!!! I never said the palm looked bad I said it was basically bare root and variegated which I specifically said I didn’t want!!! He is the only one to have a problem with their foxy lady order, and started to complain even before it was delivered. 1 of each 3 and 7 is slightly variegated with 2 of each being greens.

The pool fence isn’t nearly high enough for any shade for the entire plant, and it looks like the leaves are getting full sun most of the day, probably with low humidity. 300+ palms, 90+ species in the ground Another possibility that could be of concern is, if it was pot grown and roots had exited the drain holes and anchored into the ground, they may have been severed when lifting the pot from the ground. Hello, I’m a novice collector and bought a 15 gallon foxy lady from a seller in Temecula, CA about 2 and a half weeks ago. Some died at seedling stage, and others just died a slow death, even though they were all grown in shade.

• From what I understand about F2 hybrids, this result is not surprising.
• I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth (I wouldn’t be concerned with that at this point, except that the leaf has now snapped)
• You did not get a palm that was basically bare root and a palm you specifically said you did not want!!!
• Mine are Veitchia Joannis that we’re planted about the same time.
• There is a slight blonde strip but that why i asked is the green form Always green or does it have.
• Maybe a few other palmtalkers that I sold F2 to can pipe in.

That should happen in shade and then it should be shifted up and placed gradually into more and more sun over the course of a month or two until it is hardened and can go in the ground. Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang? I used a 4 foot foxy gold bamboo stick I bought at Home Depot and tied it to the broken leaf. Mine’s established and I still water it almost daily.

I wonder if the very elongated seed has more Veitchia traits and the more rounded F2 seed has the foxtail traits? Typically I find the F1 does have the hybrid vigor, except when they are very variegated. Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.

Regardless, good luck and hopefully you’ll be able to get a hold of this great palm sooner rather than later.. Bigger ” seeder ” at Kopsick sits close to where the collection’s Veitchia grove is located. I have little doubt that had it been spring, or this time of year, germination likely would have succeeded.
Lots of people have been sold green ‘foxy lady’ palms in the past, that eventually turn out growing up into standard foxtails. When you germinated the seeds of the foxy lady and the foxtail did you plant them at the same time? My big green one enjoys full sun however and is the fastest growing palm in my landscape and I have hundreds of palms in the ground. These foxy lady palms are thirsty and it’s nearly impossible to overwater them. The foxtails have been grown in some shade, and the foxyladies have been growing in at least 1/2 day Sun.

If so did they sprout around the same time frame? If there are variegated foxladies, they are obvious. What I have noticed is that the width of the foxylady leaves tend to be a little wider and a little more dark hairs on the leaf bases. @here does anyone have Foxy Lady seed they would like to sell? Wanting to put them out but not if they’re not a true hybrid. Hybrids seem to have a higher rate of growth for some reason.

I am good with the outcome either way, but if you really want to rid yourself of that ‘ugly’ plant,I am ready to adopt. I would LOVE to own that ‘ugly’ palm. These looked to be well grown. I have 3-7g (one slight variegation) I have 3-3g (one slight variegation)
